Last.fm

Found (well, I say found, I had heard of it before, but this was the first time I bothered to check it out) Last.fm today and it seems like a great way of finding new music based on what you already like. Sometimes this is difficult enough, especially when you don’t want to just go ahead and start buying albums willy nilly without trying out some music first, but Last.fm looks like a fantastic way of doing just that (This argument does of course presume that you don’t donwload music illegally. Which I’m sure no one does…)

The website itself is quite fun to play around on, with Facebook like friends features, and ‘neighbours’ which are a way of seeing people who share music interests with you. This way you can quickly find new bands that you should like, without relying on others to recommend them. As you play music it is automatically uplaoded to your ‘listened to’ list, and as you play more and more your list becomes the basis for interesting stats and figures based on your average listening habits. No extra work involved! All you need to do is download a small piece of software, that runs unobtrusively in the background, and it automatically watches what you play and uploads when you’re on the Internet. As far as I’ve noticed it doesn’t slow down the computer or the net, so it really is a fantastic way of telling the world what you’re listening to…

Speaking of which you can then create various interactive features to share with others, such as your own radio station, playlists, top music tracks and artist buttons etc. All great for forum signatures or just fun little gadgets for your website, and all provided free on the Last.fm website. Applause all round I think. I’ll update you in the future with how things are going, but for now enjoy my profile and the following magical buttons:
