Dell

Okay, time for an update on my XPS M1330 I think. Not that I have anything to tell you, other than it is exactly as it was. Sigh! Yes, that’s correct, over three weeks later and I am still stuck in pre-production, whatever the hell that is. Other than, of course, absolutely no closer to receiving my laptop. I have tried to resolve the issue however, so I’ll fill you in on what happened last week (W/C 13th). On Monday I thought I’d give Dell a call, to see if they could tell me any more. Now, you have to bear in mind I already had a pretty good idea of what was going on, based on a post on this blog, and the barrage of comments.

After eventually getting through to someone, who couldn’t speak English mind, but was trying, I told her my story (about how I had been waiting, and I absolutely must have the laptop by the time I go to University etc.) and she appeared most helpful. She promised me to “expedite my system’s production” as much as she could, due to my situation, and give me a call back on the 21st August to update me. She also told me that the delays were due to certain parts of the system that weren’t available in great numbers. I attacked her here a little, demanding to know why the product was released when Dell knew they couldn’t fulfill orders. Unfortunately, not knowing more than word one of English, she simply pleaded ignorance and asked if there was anything else she could help me with… So, what of the call back? Well here we are on the 23rd, with not so much as an email to let me know what’s going on, much less a phone call as promised… not good at all Dell. Really not good.

Why promise me a call then not follow through with it?? I would have been happy with a little email to tell me you still cared, but obviously even that was too much for the seemingly great Dell to manage. What are you, short staffed? I may have even settled for an automated email, but no, I get nothing. What the hell?!? Telling me a specific date you would call me, and taking my number (which you already have on my order… you may want to check that… doesn’t seem very professional asking for details you already have) and promising that I would be contacted. Okay, I’m only spending a little over a thousand pounds (2000USD) but still, I think you may just have screwed yourself over. Let’s see, would I shop at Dell again? You know, maybe in the future when I’m spending a significantly larger sum of money, you know, running into five figures…? Short answer… No. I don’t think I would. In fact, I would actively promote not going to Dell. Customers are bastards aren’t they?

So yes Dell, I’m sorry to say that you’ve lost my business. I will call today to cancel my order, after which I will consider alternatives. Yes, the M1330 may be a fantastic machine, at a great price, but seriously… if I can’t actually get one, what the hell point is it! If anyone has any suggestions on similar machines that I could look at I would greatly appreciate you leaving a comment. I was thinking maybe a similar sized Sony, or going for a completely different option such as a tablet, but I’ll consider pretty much any super compact notebook with a nice keyboard… Well, except a HP of course, known by me as ‘the laptop Satan would use’. I’ll be sure to keep you guys informed, so watch this space.
