K850i, Argh the Wait!

Hopefully good. Okay, I’m done for the day. Nah, just kidding =)

So, having ordered the phone yesterday, O2 have dispatched my order today and it should be here early next week. Fortunately they used a courier, not the shitty Royal Mail service, which means my parcel will arrive in one piece and not just get dumped on my doorstep in the rain… Not that I dislike Royal Mail, but come on. ‘Royal’? That’s stretching it a little, I very much doubt that the royal family would use this service to send anything more than their junk mail.

Seriously, this is a four hundred pound phone (for some reason I have yet to fathom) so I was very pleased to hear mine was on it’s way, safely in the hands of a genuine parcel company. So, now I wait.

Why did I pick the Sony K850i anyway then? Well my old phone, the K800i was fantastic (touted here in fact as “the best 3G handset yet?” back in August 06) so I thought, what the hell! I’ll just upgrade to the quietly released K810i and be happy. After all this fixed parhaps my biggest annoyance with the K800i is the bulky lens cover on the back, which makes the phone sit at a slanty angle when laid on it’s back. But oh no, with just a quick minutes research I found that the K810i would be utterly pointless, due to the imminent (and I mean imminent) release of the beautiful K850i.

As you’d probably guess, adding ‘40′ to the model number rather than ‘10′ definately signifies that they have done more than hack off the lens cover. Certainly not, they have completely changed the entire case, added various buttons and pretty lights, changed the keypad totally and jamed a few more features into the ever svelte body. Not only is there now a five megapixel camera, rather than three, there is also an upgraded movie mode and a clever automatic, integrated lens cover that lies flush with the rear casing. Neat!

Inside there are various high speed wireless connectivity options, as well as the usual quad band telephony options, and an accelerometer to detect when you flip the phone between landscape and portrait. Interesting they also built in a little slider switch to select between photos, videos and playback, in a very deliberate design move to make this seem even more like a digital camera. Well, I got news for you… it ain’t!! I love that it has a high quality camera with flash and it takes a decent picture, but please, please stop trying to sell me a digital camera. Canon are the only people I would buy a digital camera from, not you. I want a phone, thank you. If you wanna cram a load of gadgets into it then great, I’m all for gadgets, but I’m not going to use this as anything more than a quick snapshot camera to capture things if I’ve not got my real camera on me…

So, like I say, I’m hoping this phone will be a good successor to my beloved K800i, but it’s kinda guess work at the moment. Of course you’ll be the first to know when it arrives, and I’m hoping to do a full un boxing post and first impressions etc. Thanks for reading!
