How People Find My Site

Well, whilst bored at university if you must know, I figured I’d take a look through my Google Analytics profile and check what was happening on my site. Right, lots of hits and visits etc, but the most important part in my opinion? The keywords used to find my site. Now, I’m no expert but I thought these all had to be on my page, but some of them clearly are not, so some day I may work out how that works, but until then I will leave them shrouded in mystery. Wow, lot’s of commas in there, probably too many, but oh well…. like I’m going to proof read.

So, below are the top ten search keywords people have used to click on my site over the last couple months:

  • skegness fire (62)
  • benjamin allen (48)
  • ben allen (35)
  • currys (15)
  • benjaminallen (10)
  • things to do before you’re thirty (6)
  • “benjamin allen” (3)
  • currys skegness (3)
  • skegness fire aftermath (3)
  • skegness fire update (3)

Another interesting thing to note is that although 47% of the visitors, as a whole, are hitting the front page, the rest are landing on specific post pages, found through these keywords. In fact Google has sent nearly 150% more traffic (270 visits) than people directly bringing up the site (190), and the next highest search engine, Microsoft Live has sent just 47 visitors.

Just to drill down into those top keywords, I ran a search for related keywords, and found the following articles were bringing people to my site:

The Skegness Fire (102)

Some of the more off beat queries included, rather amusingly, “skegness fire jokes” and “skegness fire 2007” (how many others have there been??). Then there were the more normal “skegness fire pictures” and “photos of recent skegness fire“. Someone obviously cared about what happened, as they were looking to find “how did the skegness fire start“. And finally, someone really thought the Police did something (don’t get all excited, they didn’t… in fact they probably made it worse) and was trying to find “what the police did in the skegness fire in 2007“.

My Currys experience (24)

This has sent a fair amount of traffic too, from the direct “currys” (for which I must appear so far down in the listings it doesn’t bare thinking about) to the more specific “currys skegness“, to the general “currys customer service” and “complain about currys“. Good stuff. Currys, I’ve got your number.

And more recently, my K850i (37)

Here we have a whole gaggle of strange searches, including the horribly specific “sony ericisson k850i how to use the camera correctly“, “how do you adjust backlight on sony ericsson k850i” (and presumably from the same guy after he realised no websites went into such meaningless details, “can you adjust the backlight on the sony ericsson k850i“) or even “how to change touch options on k850i“. Seriously, who searches like that!? Then there have been many, many visits from people looking for information on the “k850i light“, “k850i buttons“, “k850i flash torch“, and the “k850i touch buttons“. Hmm, hopefully some of these people’s questions were answered successfully. Happy to help!

My name, Benjamin Allen (104)

Wow, seems I have a semi popular name and whilst not strictly a topic, I do seem to be mentioned some what on this site. As well as the normal queries of “benjamin allen” and “ben allen” I found several for the UK me, with “benjamin allen uk” which is rather scary as it paints the image of someone looking for a Benjamin Allen, in the UK specifically… hmm. Better keep my eyes open. Also I found a couple for “benjamin allen band” which is funny, as I’m not in a band. Oh well, maybe some day. Also pointing at me are “benjamin allen karate” and “benjamin allen english course“. Well, I could certainly run an English course for some of the illiterate zombies that wander our streets, alas, University takes far too much of my free time from me to engage in such frivolous endeavours. Hmm, that was a flowery sentence. With the shorter version of my name however there were also some worrying combinations, including “ben allen tesco“, “ben allen transfers“, “ben allen black box” and “ben allen boxing“. Awesome. I, apparently, kick ass on the ‘Net.

Okay, so that covers the ordinary (kinda) now for the extra ordinary. What these people found and, more importantly I feel, why were looking we can only guess at, but still. Enjoy the following:

Although, I must confess, all of these pale in comparison to my favorite which although having sent just one lowley visitor, has made my day… “skegness scum“. Beautiful isn’t it? I appear first in the search too, out of around two thousand. Hooray!
