Joost, Conclusion

So it’s been a few weeks now and I have tried out Joost as much as I can bear. Yes, it really is that annoying. The flashy interface that tries to be a Mac fails miserably in the usability department with slow clunky buttons and a poor response time. Unfortunately this simply makes what your watching seem even worse, and the short (edited) clips aren’t going to cut it when I have Sky+ in the corner, on a large HD TV. Not enough choice, not enough quality, and there are already too many adverts. Just imagine watching an advert before every one minute YouTube clip and you have Joost. Except without the range of YouTube. And you can only watch if you’re invited.

Wow, Joost finally sent out some more invitations to the beta, and I was one of the lucky ones! Started the download immediately and very soon I was greeted with a black screen running a full screen demonstration of what Joost was all about.

A List Apart

I know I previously mentioned that I don’t visit many sites each and every time they update, but here we find the first exception. A List Apart manages to keep me coming back time and time again for a few reasons. Firstly, and this is important, they have some of the best content publishers (and thus, content) you can find, in their field. What’s their field? Well mainly web design, but they also branch out into the more theoretical stuff such as architecture, usability and accessibility. And because they have real writers, each writing about their specialty the articles they produce are some of the very best (well, that you can read for gratis anyway). I don’t see the point in constantly checking a site for updates when you then have to check the updates for content… You want examples? Sure, here you go.
